Your Mid-Year Creative Check-In: A Gentle Audit for July

We are halfway through the year. The energy of January’s resolutions has long faded. The frantic push of holiday openings is months away. July sits in a quiet space, a perfect moment to pause, breathe, and check in with your creative practice.

Unlike your thorough year-end review (see Blog 40), this mid-year audit is gentler. It’s not about counting achievements or measuring against ambitious goals. It’s about recalibration: noticing what’s working, what’s not, and what needs a small adjustment before the second half of the year.

Step 1: Gather Your Evidence (Lightly)

You don’t need a spreadsheet. Simply look at:

What you’ve made since January. Scroll through your phone photos or flip through your sketchbook. No judgement. Just observe.

Your Word of the Year (from Blog 49). If you chose one, is it still guiding you? Does it feel alive or forgotten? You can always pick a new one!

Your energy patterns. When did you feel most engaged this year? When did you avoid the studio?

Step 2: Ask Three Gentle Questions

Question 1: What has felt like play this year?

Not what was “successful.” Not what sold. What made you lose track of time? What made you smile while making it? This is your compass pointing toward authentic work.

Question 2: What has felt like a chore?

Perhaps a commission that dragged. A series that lost its spark. A commitment you said yes to out of obligation. Name these. They are draining your creative energy.

Question 3: What have I learned about how I work best?

Maybe you’ve discovered you paint better in the morning. Or that large canvases exhaust you. Or that you need total silence. Or that you need a deadline. These insights are gold, use them to shape the rest of your year.

Step 3: Check on Your Word of the Year

In January, you might have chosen a word like PLAY, BOLD, FOCUS, or CONNECT. How is it going?

If it’s thriving: Wonderful! How can you deepen it in the coming months?

If it’s forgotten: No shame. Simply recommit. Write it somewhere visible.

If it no longer fits: Words can change. July is a perfect time to choose a new one for the second half of the year. Perhaps EASE if you’ve been pushing too hard. Or FINISH if you have too much started.

Step 4: Make One Small Adjustment

Big changes are overwhelming. Small adjustments are sustainable. Based on your answers above, identify one thing to shift in August.

Examples:

“I’ll protect Tuesday mornings for studio time instead of squeezing in random hours.”

“I’ll finish that half-done series before starting anything new.”

“I’ll unsubscribe from three ‘opportunity’ emails that just make me feel anxious.”

“I’ll invite an artist friend for a studio visit to break my isolation.”

Step 5: Schedule Your Rest

The second half of the year often rushes by. Autumn shows, Christmas markets, end-of-year deadlines. Before the momentum builds, deliberately schedule:

One week of true rest (no studio, no guilt).

One “play day” per month (experiment with no outcome in mind).

Put these in your calendar now. Protect them as you would a paid commission.

A Final Thought

The mid-year check-in is not a performance review. It is a conversation with yourself. You are not falling behind. You are not failing. You are simply navigating the natural ebb and flow of a creative life. July asks nothing of you except honesty and kindness.

Take twenty minutes with a cup of tea. Look back gently. Look forward lightly. Then return to your studio with a renewed sense of what matters to you.
