- The first thing which comes to mind with watercolour paints is the transparency and lightness that they allow you to create. This also means that the paints can create soft, ethereal effects that are perfect for delicate subjects and well as dramatic seascapes and landscapes.
- Portability and ease of use is the reason so many people take up this amazing paint medium. Watercolours are ideal for plein air (outdoor) painting.
- Quick drying times are another great benefit of watercolours. Because they dry fast it allows you to work faster, layering colours without having to wait long for each layer to dry.
- Watercolour is a versatile product which allows you to achieve a variety of effects, ranging from beautiful soft washes to detailed and intricate lines.
- Watercolour paints are really affordable and very easy to clean up. They generally don’t stain your clothes, though some pigments can so it is best to wear an apron. In general, though, they are perfect for any age group to enjoy.
As with all art products, the quality of the paints you use needs to be considered carefully. Student grade watercolour paint has very little pigments in, compared to the best quality paints, so if you are on a budget try and start with one of the cheaper professional paints. It will make a huge difference to the outcomes of your work.
If you are not getting good results because of the paper you are painting on, the brushes are not reasonable watercolour brushes and/or the paint is of poor quality, you will give up and that means everything you have done so far will be a waste. Buy the best paper, brushes and paint you can afford and then spend time learning what you can achieve with that product or combination of products.
Once you have your good paint, experimenting with different types of watercolour paper is an excellent idea as they all lend themselves to different types of outcomes.
